Max Perkins

I just finished reading Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A. Scott Berg. What a good read! The content is fascinating, and Berg is a fine writer. He does a thorough job of describing Perkins, the editor of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Thomas Wolfe, among others, and Perkins’ close relationships with these authors. For Perkins, clearly, being an editor involved more than pruning the words on the page. It also meant being there for his authors in significant ways–financially, emotionally, and inspirationally. I recommend the book highly. And now I’m eager to see Genius, the film based on the book.
